Dar Hussein began as a residence for princes, deys, and beys in the medina of Tunis. Successive rulers expanded the complex and added architectural elements according to their tastes. The surviving interior ornamentation reflects the specific choices of minister Youssef Saheb Ettabaa, giving the halls a cohesive decorative scheme that outlasted the dynastic courts that originally commissioned the building.

French general Léonard-Léopold Forgemol de Bostquénard subsequently commandeered the estate during the colonial occupation.
