Long-term residents walk the slopes of Mouseion Hill for quiet work breaks away from dense central streets, treating the ridge as an open daily terrace.
The ancient Roman mausoleum honours Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos, an exiled prince from the Kingdom of Commagene. Standing southwest of the Acropolis atop Mouseion Hill, the structure once included a complete marble tomb chamber. Early travel records and drawings by merchant Cyriacus of Ancona preserve the original layout before later centuries brought severe structural damage.
Only a ruined front façade and the foundation base survive on the summit today. Historic investigations confirmed that stone blocks from the monument were taken to build the minaret of the Parthenon during the Ottoman era. Modern archaeological teams under Thompson and Travlos excavated the surroundings to secure the remaining foundation.
