Downtown residents navigate past neoclassical courtyards where national debates took place before legislative operations shifted toward the coast.
The neoclassical complex served as the headquarters of the national legislature in downtown Santiago throughout decades of political change. Construction began under President Manuel Montt Torres and finished under President Federico Errázuriz Zañartu. After a devastating fire destroyed the original structure, workers rebuilt the halls in time for the parliamentary era before a military coup displaced the assembly.
Following the relocation of plenary debates to Valparaíso, the state protected the property as a national monument and repurposed its rooms for the ministry of foreign affairs. Both legislative branches eventually reoccupied workspace inside the compound. The surrounding gardens feature varied exotic trees on land that once held the Church of the Company, providing a quiet public perimeter in the capital.
