About the place

Stavanger Cathedral anchors the urban core between Breiavatnet and the harbour.

Stavanger Cathedral stands in the Storhaug borough between Lake Breiavatnet and the harbour basin at Vågen. Bishop Reinald of Winchester initiated the stone construction, dedicating the structure to Saint Swithun. After a severe urban fire swept through the district, Bishop Arne directed reconstruction work that expanded the original Romanesque nave with Gothic choir extensions and corner towers.

The cathedral served as an election church during the first national vote for the assembly that drafted the Norwegian constitution. Parishioners gathered within the stone hall to select delegates for the constitutional convention. Inside the nave, Scottish woodcarver Andrew Lawrenceson Smith produced ornate fixtures, while sculpted medieval monarchs mark the portal into the sacristy.
