Residents along Paseo de la Reforma plan their weekly commutes around the major civic rallies and cycling closures that regularly claim the roundabout.
Commissioned under President Porfirio Diaz and designed by architect Antonio Rivas Mercado, the monument combines classical column architecture with bronze statues. Italian artist Enrique Alciati produced the sculptures. Early structural collapse caused by poorly planned foundations forced engineers to demolish the initial stonework entirely before rebuilding the column for the centenary of national independence.
Standing along the central roundabout of Paseo de la Reforma, the monument anchors major municipal gatherings, national celebrations, and protest marches. Severe earthquakes have historically shaken the victory figure from its perch, while social demonstrations have prompted long municipal closures for structural restoration and surface cleaning before the site reopened to foot traffic.
