Coastal communities including Boca Raton, Wellington, and Jupiter depend on this hub for scheduled commercial flights. Direct road links via Southern Boulevard and Congress Avenue channel regional traffic into the terminal complex, while Palm Tran bus shuttles connect arriving passengers to commuter rail lines.

Federal agencies later based heavy transport training wings and hurricane research operations on the runways. Frequent presidential visits by Air Force One during the administration of John F. Kennedy prompted county voters to expand the original grounds rather than relocate the terminal facilities.
