Commuters treat the monument steps as a navigational anchor between Whitehall and Soho, learning to dodge sudden political rallies and gallery crowds during evening rush hours.
William Railton designed the monument in front of the National Gallery using granite blocks from Dartmoor quarries. Its Corinthian capital incorporates bronze cast from cannon salvaged from the wreck of HMS Royal George at Woolwich Arsenal. The pedestal features bronze battle reliefs, while bronze lions sculpted by Edwin Landseer guard the perimeter steps.
Edward Hodges Baily carved the summit statue of Horatio Nelson out of Craigleith sandstone from a Scottish quarry. The column commemorates Nelson's fatal naval engagement at Trafalgar against French and Spanish fleets. Foreign wartime planners marked the structure for removal, with German invasion strategies outlining a scheme to transport the entire column to Berlin.
