The former palace complex preserves centuries of royal art and archaeological records across its sprawling halls.

The museum functions as the central branch of Thailand's national museum network and ranks among the largest cultural storehouses in Southeast Asia. King Chulalongkorn founded the institution to house royal antiquities collected by King Mongkut, initially displaying the items at the Concordia Pavilion before transferring them to the former palace of the vice king between Thammasat University and the National Theater.
