Residents based in Jurong East trade central urban bustle for wide lakeside corridors, relying on suburban train links while long-term institutional redevelopments shift the neighborhood.
The institution split from the National Museum of Singapore to separate technical education from artistic and historical collections. Architect Raymond Woo designed the original Jurong East campus following a competition. The complex later expanded to add the Omni-Theatre with its tilted dome alongside Snow City, an indoor freezing pavilion operating in equatorial humidity.
A major relocation shifts the campus toward Jurong Lake beside Chinese Garden station. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects and partner firms, the replacement facility features interlocking rectangular structures with large glass windows looking over the water. For long-term residents in western districts, this construction project reshapes neighborhood transit patterns and solidifies the district as a center for science education.
