Residents in Dorsoduro quickly learn that daily life around Rio di San Barnaba means hauling groceries across arched bridges and relying entirely on water routes.
The palazzo stands along the Grand Canal in Dorsoduro at the junction with Rio di San Barnaba. Begun under the direction of architect Baldassarre Longhena for the patrician Bon family, the structure remained incomplete when soaring expenses drained the patrons of funds. The site stood partially ruined until the Rezzonico family purchased the property, commissioning Giorgio Massari to finish the palace facade and interior.
Massari departed from local building traditions by placing the ceremonial ballroom at the rear rather than over the water. He installed a monumental interior stairway leading from a courtyard fountain, crowned the salons with frescoed ceilings by Giovanni Battista Crosato and Girolamo Mengozzi Colonna, and introduced upper oval windows to maximize interior light across the grand reception chambers.
Today the palazzo operates under the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia as a public museum focused on late Venetian decorative arts and painting. The galleries feature masterworks by Giambattista Tiepolo alongside canvases by Francesco Guardi, showing how noble households displayed domestic wealth. Residents in Dorsoduro navigate the surrounding quay as a daily pedestrian route between canal bridges.
