Residents staying near Santa Croce walk past the Buonarroti family complex daily, trading crowded museum corridors for direct access to early marble relief carvings and family manuscripts.
Michelangelo acquired adjoining properties north of the Basilica di Santa Croce while working on the façade of the Basilica of San Lorenzo. He rented out parts of the estate and later left the grounds to his nephew Leonardo. Michelangelo the Younger subsequently unified the structures into a noble family residence, creating monumental ceremonial rooms designed to honor his great-uncle's artistic legacy.
The interior gallery displays early marble sculptures by Michelangelo, including the Madonna of the Stairs and the Battle of the Centaurs. Ceiling and wall paintings commissioned from Artemisia Gentileschi and other Italian masters adorn the gallery rooms. An extensive library preserves the Buonarroti family archive alongside personal letters and sketches, offering researchers primary evidence of the sculptor's working methods.
Michelangelo directed the estate from Rome, insisting on an honorable family residence that would uphold the household dignity. Long-term visitors discover that the museum functions as an intimate memorial rather than an exhaustive retrospective. Temporary exhibitions previously hosted the authenticated wooden Santo Spirito Crucifix before the devotional carving returned to the sacristy of the Church of Santo Spirito.
