Commissioned by a court dancer during the Mughal era, Masjid Mubarak Begum stands in red sandstone above the dense quarter of Hauz Qazi.

Mubarak Begum began dancing in Pune before serving as a court performer in the Mughal capital. The British resident to the imperial court, David Ochterlony, married her and erected the sanctuary in her name. Constructed from red sandstone in the Mughal architectural tradition, the building marked an unusual commission because a court dancer rather than a member of the royal dynasty funded its construction.

Locals refer to the site colloquially as Randi ki Masjid, reflecting the historic background of its founder. The building sits in the Hauz Qazi neighborhood close to Chawri Bazaar metro station, where commercial traffic and crowded alleys define daily life. Following the founder's death, British colonial authorities took control of the premises, which remains a rare mosque established by female patronage across India.
