Residents trade flat commutes for daily climbs through the fortress gates, gaining quiet ramparts and open green lawns above the crowded central streets.
Early Přemyslid rulers established their royal seat on this high promontory before governance shifted back to the main castle. Later imperial rulers rebuilt the palace and walls, but successive wars left the site in ruins. The Habsburg monarchy reconstructed the perimeter as a Baroque fortress with heavy brick bastions and military gates, turning the grounds into an army training base.
Within the ramparts stand the neo-Gothic Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul alongside the Romanesque Rotunda of St. Martin. The adjacent Vyšehrad Cemetery holds the graves of prominent cultural figures, including composers Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana, writer Karel Čapek, and artist Alphonse Mucha. Ruined medieval masonry, such as the Gothic lookout known as Libuše's Bath, survives along the cliff edge.
Today the fortress functions as a public park and municipal cadastral district rather than an active military installation. Local residents use the rampart paths for regular exercise and gather on the lawns for public celebrations, including New Year's Eve. For long-term tenants, the enclosed grounds offer an uncrowded retreat from the urban center, though daily access requires navigating steep stairs and massive gates.
