Long-term residents head down into the canyon arena for quiet track workouts, accepting steep stair climbs back to the city in exchange for space sheltered from street congestion.
The venue stands out in civil engineering as a pioneering sports arena constructed across a rugged mountain gorge. Architects Koryun Hakobyan and Gurgen Musheghyan, who were former competitive athletes, shaped the grandstands to fit the natural slope of the canyon. Support from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation helped fund the build, which earned the national award for construction of the year from the central government.
Football defines the sporting legacy of the bowl. The complex staged international matches against Greece and Finland, functioned as the home pitch for the national football team, and hosted domestic cup finals. Beyond football fixtures, the stands accommodated the opening ceremonies for the Pan-Armenian Games, though the original celebration famously had to be rescheduled when severe snowfall blanketed the valley.
Statesman Anastas Mikoyan originally conceived the venue after observing the gorge topography from his residence, leading to high-level oversight from party leader Karen Demirchyan and an opening attended by Leonid Brezhnev. Subsequent modernisation transformed the terraced stands into an all-seater configuration. The complex remains the largest spectator arena in the country, tucked below the surrounding street grid.
