Tenants who settle in downtown Orlando trade highway commutes for walking through Heritage Park, finding central blocks surprisingly removed from tourist corridors.
The museum occupies the historic neoclassical courthouse in downtown Orlando, operating as a private non-profit institution dedicated to regional heritage. Its galleries house the permanent collections of the Historical Society of Central Florida, tracing local life from pre-Columbian eras through modern urban growth. Civic leaders reassigned the hall to cultural preservation after active trials shifted to a nearby high-rise.
Architect Murry S. King designed the neoclassical landmark, and his son James B. King finished construction following his death. The top floor formerly operated as the county jail, complete with an infirmary and residential quarters for the jailor. Outside, Heritage Park borders the entrance after county crews cleared a contaminated administrative annex, giving downtown residents open green space beside municipal archives.
