Mile High Stadium defined outdoor athletics in Denver before city crews dismantled the structure.

Bob Howsam founded the site on a former municipal landfill under the name Bears Stadium to host minor league baseball. High attendance figures encouraged an ambitious bid for the proposed Continental League alongside Branch Rickey. The collapse of that venture left Howsam with heavy debts, prompting him to introduce professional football to keep the facility active outside the traditional summer baseball calendar.

Denver acquired the venue and renamed it Mile High Stadium to satisfy expansion requirements for the football merger between rival leagues. The Denver Broncos established an unbroken sellout streak that spanned every home fixture. Engineers later added movable multi-tier stands that floated on pumped water bearings, allowing hydraulic rams to shift the seating between baseball configurations and a football horseshoe.
