Residents around the Duomo detour through interior arcades and side lanes to reach morning tram connections without tourist delays.
Archbishop Antonio da Saluzzo and Gian Galeazzo Visconti initiated construction, establishing the Fabbrica del Duomo to govern the works. The initial plan for Lombard brickwork gave way to Rayonnant Gothic under French chief engineers. Visconti granted exclusive tax exemptions for marble from the Candoglia quarry, forcing masons to devise new lifting techniques to hoist blocks to unprecedented heights.
Disputes between foreign consultants and local builders shaped structural execution. French architect Jean Mignot criticized early masonry as unscientific, prompting engineering revisions. Tension escalated when Visconti attempted to convert the interior into a dynastic mausoleum for his lineage. Civic administrators and citizens resisted the ducal takeover, compelling Visconti to relocate his dynastic burial project to Pavia.
Beneath the nave floor, archaeological excavations preserve the octagonal Battistero Paleocristiano and remnants of earlier basilicas replaced by the Gothic structure. The complex continues its active ecclesiastical role as the seat of the Archbishop of Milan, dedicated to the Nativity of Saint Mary. The surrounding urban street pattern preserves this site as the geographic and civic core of the metropolitan area.
