The institution traces its lineage to the Musée du Luxembourg, established under royal decree for living artists whose work transferred to the Louvre posthumously. Plans by Auguste Perret led to permanent construction at the Palais de Tokyo before the state relocated the galleries into the Centre Pompidou. Today the museum maintains one of the largest public holdings of contemporary and modern art in the world.

Wartime evacuation dispersed the initial inventory into provincial caches, allowing only partial exhibitions before full peacetime reorganization. Director Jean Cassou subsequently expanded the holdings through personal ties with artists such as Picasso and Braque, alongside foreign collections formerly kept at the Musée du Jeu de Paume. Residents navigating Beaubourg face persistent tourist congestion around the plaza entrance.
