About the place

Chion-in anchors the Jodo-shu Buddhist tradition across the wooded hills of Higashiyama.

Chion-in functions as the head temple of Jodo-shu, established in Higashiyama by the disciple Genchi in honor of the founder Honen. The founding doctrine centers on reciting the nembutsu, invoking Amida Buddha so that sentient beings attain rebirth in the Western Paradise. Early leadership unified doctrinal disputes between the Seizan and Chinzei factions, consolidating Chinzei control over the monastic seat.

Military conflict and severe fires repeatedly interrupted operations, with the Onin War breaking administrative control before widespread blazes destroyed earlier halls. Tokugawa shogun Iemitsu directed the complete reconstruction, replacing lost halls with palatial timber architecture. The sprawling compound functions today as an active monastic headquarters, demanding quiet adherence to ritual schedules from neighboring residents.
