Residents around the keep cross feudal moats on ordinary grocery runs, trading modern downtown noise for park paths beside wartime foundations.

About the place

Hiroshima Castle anchors the flatland center as a reconstructed landmark where regional samurai administration and wartime command once converged.

Mori Terumoto established the fortress on delta islands once known as Gokamura, governing several western provinces from the new seat. Construction prompted the change to the name Hiroshima, blending ancestral family names with the river landscape. Following the battle of Sekigahara, Fukushima Masanori took control until unauthorized flood repairs caused his removal, passing stewardship to the Asano clan.

The compound shifted into an imperial military base after the Meiji transition, leaving stone headquarters foundations that still mark the inner ward. Wartime divisions occupied the installation until the atomic bomb blast fractured the lower pillars of the wooden keep and brought down the tower. A concrete replica restored the historic profile, operating as a museum dedicated to pre-war urban history.
