Residents in Miyanomori share their morning transit with winter athletes heading up Mount Okura, trading central subway convenience for steep residential hills and active jump training on the slopes above.
Founded by Kishichiro Okura with financial backing and guidance from Prince Chichibu, the jump was planned by Norwegian ski federation leader Olaf Helset. Sapporo received the facility as a municipal gift, adopting the German term Schanze at the dedication ceremony held by Mayor Masaharu Hashimoto. The site later hosted the Winter Olympic Games and Nordic World Ski Championships on the steep hillside of Miyanomori.
Modern upgrades added a summer track enabling jumps outside winter, accompanied by floodlights and an extended mountain lift. The surrounding grounds combine the Winter Sports Museum, the Crystal House, and a summit observation deck above the city. Jurisdiction over the venue transferred from national ministries to municipal control, alongside a monument honoring the Olympic theme song.
