Tenants settling in Clos Saint-Lazare trade residential quiet for daily access to Europe's busiest railway terminus.
The current station arose after the original terminal in Clos Saint-Lazare proved unable to handle surging traffic. Architect Jacques Ignace Hittorff designed the replacement complex around a U-shaped terminus and a stone triumphal arch. Because domestic foundries lacked capacity, interior cast-iron support pillars were manufactured in Glasgow. The original building front was carefully dismantled and moved to Lille.
Statues across the exterior chronicle rail routes of the era, crowned by an allegorical figure of Paris and flanked by foreign capitals such as London and Berlin. Lower tiers depict regional French destinations. Today, newcomers encounter Europe's busiest rail terminal, where constant international arrivals share space with domestic commuter lines and film crews using the grand concourse as a dramatic backdrop.
