Residents on the Presqu'île treat these immense public courtyards as an everyday thoroughfare, trading quiet residential streets for constant pedestrian footfall through former hospital cloisters.
The site originated in medieval times as a pontifical refuge for clergy before becoming a major hospital staffed by resident physicians like Maître Martin Conras. Lyon's seasonal fairs brought foreign merchants and travelers to the wards for care. Doctor François Rabelais composed Gargantua and Pantagruel while on staff here, alongside Pierre Tolet, who championed the use of the French language in medical practice.
Architectural overhauls by Guillaume Ducellet and Jacques-Germain Soufflot replaced the medieval buildings with expansive wings, grand courtyards, and a riverside dome. The hospital complex expanded across the Presqu'île, eventually reaching beyond Place Bellecour. These classical stone façades along the right bank of the Rhône river secured the site's inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the historic city.
Clinical operations ceased when the medical wards permanently closed, prompting a massive commercial redevelopment into high-end retail galleries and the luxury InterContinental hotel. The complex retains its healthcare legacy through the Museum of the Civil Hospices of Lyon, which displays historical apothecary vases. Outside the western walls, Renaissance poet Louise Labé once lived alongside the growing infirmary.
