Residents staying along Libertad Street share their block with the oldest synagogue community in the country, stepping between the daily rush around Teatro Colón and the quiet archives of the on-site Jewish history museum.
The sanctuary stands on Libertad Street near Teatro Colón as the spiritual home of Congregación Israelita de la República Argentina. Founded as the earliest Jewish congregation in the country, the community practices Reform Judaism and maintains an active institutional life. Visitors and long-term residents encounter an operational house of prayer that also preserves communal memory through its dedicated Jewish history museum.
Engineers Alejandro Enquin and Eugenio Gantner directed the building works from the laying of the cornerstone through to the final inauguration. Their plan incorporates Romanesque Revival elements inspired by historic German synagogues. The resulting sanctuary gathers the community for regular prayer, giving long-term residents a clear window into historic European building styles preserved within the central district.
