The arena originated as Estadio de la Exposición for the Ibero-American Exposition under plans by Aníbal González Álvarez-Ossorio and Antonio Illanes del Río, with engineering input from Manuel María Smith. Real Betis became the primary tenant and later bought the ground outright under club leadership from Benito Villamarín. During wartime conflict the municipality requisitioned the venue for military housing.
