Residents living near Bornay Mosque shape their routines around an active house of worship that survived Soviet closure.
Merchant Möxämmätsadíq Bornayıv financed the construction of the building, which also carries the name Burnayevskaya Mosque. Architect Pyotr Ivanovich Romanov drafted the original plans, establishing a red-brick hall built in the national romance eclectic style. Architect Fyodor Nikolayevich Malinovsky later added the minaret positioned directly above the entrance door, blending medieval Tatar traditions with Russian brickwork.
Soviet authorities closed the complex and halted worship, keeping the property out of public religious life until regional officials returned it to believers. The restored prayer hall now operates as an active house of worship rather than a museum. Long-term residents encounter a functioning neighborhood parish where worshippers gather daily, while local hospitality networks help incoming visitors integrate into the district.
