Archelaus established the settlement as a royal capital, commissioning the painter Zeuxis to decorate the palace while hosting Euripides to stage classic drama. The urban core expanded across a hillside enclosed by deep wetlands, relying on the fortified Phacus island citadel connected by a bridge. Philip and Alexander the Great were born here, turning the walled settlement into a primary seat of regional power.
