This Grand Canal palazzo operated as a fortified compound where Ottoman merchants lodged and stored their goods under Venetian state supervision.

The building originated as a private palace before the Venetian Republic purchased the estate for the Este rulers of Ferrara. For generations, the premises served as a diplomatic residence and lodging for visiting ambassadors. Control eventually passed back to Venetian hands when Senator Antonio Priuli acquired the property and leased it to house Ottoman traders who previously rented scattered quarters across the city.
