About the place

The stone suspension crossing anchors the central river passage between the old royal district and the commercial center.

The structure links Széchenyi Square beside Gresham Palace and the Academy of Sciences on the eastern bank directly to Adam Clark Square beneath Castle Hill. Conceived by Count István Széchenyi and financed substantially by merchant Georgios Sinas, it established the first permanent crossing over the river. Components fabricated in Britain were assembled on site by Adam Clark following designs William Tierney Clark adapted from Marlow Bridge.

Carved stone lions by sculptor János Marschalkó guard the abutments, giving rise to an urban legend about missing tongues that are simply hidden from street view. Wartime demolition during the siege left only the support towers intact before the span was rebuilt from scratch. Inscriptions across the pylons preserve the engineer's name in Hungarian word order, while commuters encounter the bridge profile stamped on daily pocket coinage.
