Tenants in Santa Croce face the station crowds right across the water every morning, though the surrounding alleys remain detached from the terminal rush.
Designed by Giovanni Antonio Scalfarotto, the church combines multiple architectural influences into an early Neoclassical form. The circular floor plan and pronounced metal dome draw on Byzantine traditions and the Basilica di San Marco, while the temple front with its pronaos replicates the Pantheon. The pediment features a marble relief of the martyrdom of the saints carved by Francesco Penso, also known as il Cabianca.
The edifice represents a late church project in Venice, placed within the historically modest sestiere of Santa Croce. Outside, the steps look directly across the Grand Canal toward the railway terminal, catching the main arrival route into the city. Inside, centrifugal chapels surround the central space, where the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter continues to celebrate liturgical services following the historical Roman Missal.
