The gallery safeguards Venetian painting across centuries inside a historic monastic complex.

The collection occupies the former convent, church, and guild hall of Santa Maria della Carità along the south bank of the Grand Canal in Dorsoduro. The halls display pre-modern masterworks of Venetian art, including Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, which rests in protected storage and emerges only for brief public displays.

The institution originated as a fine arts academy under Venetian masters including Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and Gianbattista Tiepolo. The site pioneered formal methods in art restoration under Pietro Edwards before moving into the Carità complex. The gallery later split from the school to function as a standalone state museum.
