St. Joseph's Church stands on Wangfujing Street as a Romanesque Revival structure among the historic Catholic sanctuaries of the Archdiocese of Beijing.

Jesuit missionaries Lodovico Buglio and Gabriel de Magalhães established the original congregation on land granted by the Shunzhi Emperor, who valued their astronomical expertise. Known locally as Dongtang or Wangfujing Church, the site underwent repeated destruction from earthquakes, fires, and the Boxer Rebellion. The current Romanesque Revival building features prominent pilasters and bell towers along the pedestrian corridor.

Municipal funding later enabled full architectural restoration and the resumption of regular Catholic services.
