Residents in Dongcheng step from the commercial bustle of Wangfujing pedestrian mall directly into quiet courtyards under Romanesque arches.
Jesuit missionaries Lodovico Buglio and Gabriel de Magalhães established the original congregation on land granted by the Shunzhi Emperor, who valued their astronomical expertise. Known locally as Dongtang or Wangfujing Church, the site underwent repeated destruction from earthquakes, fires, and the Boxer Rebellion. The current Romanesque Revival building features prominent pilasters and bell towers along the pedestrian corridor.
State authorities expropriated the parish to operate an elementary school before closing the complex during the Cultural Revolution. Municipal funding later enabled full architectural restoration and the resumption of regular Catholic services. The Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association administers the parish, where former priest Joseph Li Shan became Archbishop of Beijing with the joint approval of the government and the Holy See.
