National Garden of Athens: what's nearby, how to get there and when to go · 2026

Residents walking between Kolonaki and Pangrati use the grounds to bypass avenue traffic, but evening commuters have to detour around the perimeter once the gates lock at sunset.

About the place

The National Garden spreads behind the Greek Parliament, forming the main shaded expanse between Kolonaki and Pangrati.

Queen Amalia established the grounds as a private royal retreat, hiring Friedrich Schmidt to introduce exotic trees along with waterfowl and turtles. The arid local climate killed off many introduced botanical species, forcing subsequent managers to adapt the canopy. Formerly restricted to afternoon royal leisure, the site eventually transferred to municipal administration, serving as a permanent public reserve.

Dense foliage conceals antiquity throughout the interior walkways. Commuters encounter surviving Roman floor mosaics, scattered column drums, Corinthian capitals, and remnants of antique bathhouses. Marble busts honor poet Dionysios Solomos and statesman Ioannis Kapodistrias along peripheral trails. The southern alleys open directly onto Zappeion Hall, connecting quiet gravel paths to adjacent exhibition plazas.

The grounds witnessed a pivotal shift in modern Greek governance when a monkey bite inflicted fatal sepsis on King Alexander during his routine walk. That event precipitated the restoration of King Constantine, the removal of seasoned military officers, and the disastrous collapse of the Asia Minor campaign. Today, towering fan palms planted by Queen Amalia mark the central avenue gates opposite the national legislature.
