About the place

Phidias built the chryselephantine sculpture as the monumental heart of the Parthenon.

Phidias designed the monumental chryselephantine statue of Athena as the central dedication for the Parthenon naos on the Athenian acropolis. The exterior combined carved ivory with sheets of gold, requiring a basin of oiled water at the base to prevent the organic ivory from drying out. Behind the gleaming facade lay a rough internal core assembled from wooden framework, metal nails, pitch, and structural clay.

Accusations of diverting sacred gold plagued Phidias, forcing his departure to Olympia before legal persecution linked to Pericles could culminate in execution. Later rulers stripped the remaining precious plating to finance military campaigns. Severe fire damage to the temple interior eventually led to structural alterations, after which historical records fall silent on whether the repaired work was destroyed or moved elsewhere.
