About the place

A landmark of monumental scale defines the surrounding historical quarter.

The monument represents the culmination of Byzantine architecture through its massive pendentive dome over an expansive interior hall. Built beside the imperial palace grounds as the primary patriarchal cathedral, the structure later saw Latin Crusader rule, functioned as an Ottoman mosque with minarets, and transitioned through museum status before resuming regular religious services for the public.

Archaeological investigations reveal that the earliest basilica on the site, historically designated as the Great Church, stood along an ancient stone road beside Hagia Irene. Surviving structural layers preserve alternating brick and stone masonry from the western propylaeum portal alongside a circular skeuophylakion, an adjacent baptistery, and a subterranean hypogeum chamber that predates the monumental sanctuary.
