Settling into the upper reaches of Ano Poli trades easy waterfront transit for quiet cobblestone lanes and direct daily views of late Byzantine brickwork.
Church of Saint Catherine sits in the northwestern corner of the Ano Poli quarter. The structure represents late Byzantine architecture from the Palaiologan period and forms part of the Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments inscribed by UNESCO. Its surviving interior features fragmented wall paintings and decorative masonry characteristic of metropolitan church design.
Scholars identify the building as the former principal church of the Monastery of the Almighty. During the Ottoman era, Yakup Pasha converted the property into a neighbourhood mosque bearing his name. Residents in the surrounding upper district navigate steep stone alleys and preserved domestic lanes that separate this monumental site from the commercial seaside.
