About the place

King Eumenes of Pergamon gifted this monumental covered colonnade to shelter Athenian theatregoers from sudden rain and sun.

The long gallery connects the Theater of Dionysus with the Odeon of Herodes Atticus across the southern terrace of the Acropolis. A heavy retaining wall of breccia and limestone supported the pathway above the arcade. Builders faced the northern masonry with regional marble, creating an elevated corridor that linked major performance venues across the hillside.

Stonemasons carved the principal architectural members in Asia Minor from island marble before shipping them across the Aegean Sea to Athens. The building shared its two-tier architectural scheme with the Stoa of Attalos in the central marketplace. Subsequent centuries saw its materials repurposed for defensive walls until Athenian archaeologists excavated the foundations.
