Tenants settling along North Michigan Avenue learn to tune out commercial shopping crowds and treat this Gothic stone landmark as their daily orientation point.
Architect William W. Boyington designed the fortress-style tower using Lemont limestone to conceal a tall municipal standpipe. Combined with the adjacent Chicago Avenue Pumping Station, the system drew fresh lake water to regulate urban pressure and supply fire hydrants. The Gothic structure earned national fame when it stood through the Great Chicago Fire, emerging as the only surviving public municipal edifice in the burned district.
Beyond its survival history, the site served as an emergency depot for donated books from Queen Victoria to rebuild regional libraries. Modern residents encounter the stone landmark inside Jane Byrne Park, where the interior functions as an intimate gallery showcasing local photographers and filmmakers. Its castellated turrets drew ridicule from Oscar Wilde yet later influenced the visual architecture of White Castle restaurants.
