À propos du lieu

The complex replaces a legendary wartime research barrack with Frank Gehry architecture designed to force daily collision between disciplines.

The complex stands on ground previously occupied by an emergency wartime laboratory erected for radiation research. That predecessor survived across decades because its timber framework allowed occupants to knock down partitions and reconfigure workrooms at will. Frank Gehry designed the successor facility for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to house academic departments above an underground parking structure.

Long-term fellows inherit an environment shaped by student clubs such as the Tech Model Railroad Club and amateur electronics groups that anchored the site for generations. The resulting structure relies on leaning towers, angular metal surfaces, and transparent communal zones that compel researchers to cross paths continually. Residents must adapt to irregular interior layouts where quiet study spaces sit beside busy public thoroughfares.
