À propos du lieu

A research university built around practical application.

Chartered in Massachusetts to promote industrial science and applied knowledge, the institution established instruction around seminar rooms and physical laboratories. Founded on land-grant funding, the original curriculum prioritized technical engineering alongside core physical laws, developing into a major scientific hub.

Earlier decades in central Boston brought severe space restrictions and multiple attempts by neighboring institutions to incorporate the school. A permanent relocation to filled land along the Cambridge waterfront allowed the construction of custom neoclassical complexes, cementing an independent course for modern technological research.

17.08.2012 Boston, MA.

We arrived in Boston the day before yesterday! The journey here is a whole story in itself. We didn't know until the very last minute if we were going, then decided at 5 AM that we were. Then my train to NYC was delayed, so we missed our bus and had to change tickets. While driving, we got stuck in traffic and ended up arriving at our Couchsurfer's place close to midnight. We went to sleep, and in the morning, we were already off to storm Boston. Vika was running around like a wind-up toy, I could barely keep up with her. The energy that girl has, wow! We visited Harvard University (I'm sometimes tempted to call it Hogwarts). We met a bunch of Russian tourists there and chatted with them. Then we went to the center and started combing through the surroundings far and wide. I was really pleased with the simple and understandable subway, almost like in Moscow. And in general, Boston felt native and somehow cozy to me. It's very quiet everywhere, especially compared to New York, but at the same time, the city is buzzing with life. And I, being silly, didn't want to leave that New York. Now I look back on that metropolis with mixed feelings—dusty, dirty, with tons of people... But before leaving, it seemed like the best city in the States to me. Actually, in Boston, I didn't feel like a tourist; I felt like a part of the city. The city's vibe matched my inner world so well. The next day Vika left, and Tahir arrived, my travel companion for the next 2 days in Boston and Washington. We met up and went to explore MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Admission was free, but we didn't find anything interesting there... for some reason, it was just endless restrooms, office spaces, rooms piled with furniture, and 2 TVs. Then we trudged to the "rock," or rather the Bunker Hill Monument, which you can climb on foot—nearly 300 steps—to see Boston from above. Inside the structure, it turned out to be like a cave—dark and stuffy. And a huge spiral staircase led endlessly upward. It felt like it would never end. But the views of Boston from that thing didn't impress me that much; it was interesting, but I expected more. That's it, bye Boston. Now I'm sitting at the station waiting for the bus. Next stop - Washington DC.
