À propos du lieu

Heavy industry and commercial trade built the modern urban layout.

Iron manufacturing and specialized metal trades drove the initial commercial expansion of the settlement. Independent workshops in the historic Jewellery Quarter continue artisan jewellery production today, while large vehicle assembly and confectionery plants operate in outer districts. Professional services, education, and healthcare dominate modern employment, supporting high business formation alongside heritage trades.

The urban core functions largely as a pedestrian zone, connecting central public squares and retail hubs without vehicular traffic. Restored canal corridors provide alternative walking and cycling connections through central districts, though peripheral towpaths transition to unpaved dirt. Daily transit relies on buses, suburban trains, and street trams because the city operates without an underground rail network.

Distinct culinary and cultural traditions define local neighbourhood identity. Immigrant communities established the balti style of cooking, preparing curries in pressed steel woks across southern districts. Influential heavy metal bands and global bhangra musical movements emerged from the local scene. Sharp economic divides persist across inner wards, resulting in noticeable variations in employment and residential conditions.

Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia

After Dallas comes the state of Arkansas and the city of Little Rock! The capital of Arkansas! I'll just note that the Capitol is located there!!! Otherwise, there's nothing else remarkable. Birmingham, well, there's nothing interesting in the city ))) Only a mountain called Vulcan or something like that, where a huge guy stands on a tall monument that you can climb to see the whole city!!! Atlanta is the capital of the state of Georgia!! The tallest building in Atlanta is the Bank of America Plaza, which is 312 meters high. Also, the Coca-Cola headquarters is here! Atlanta was the host city of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games!!

Birmingham , Alabama

Birmingham, Alabama Maricela. I met Maricela when I was assigned to learn housekeeping from her. At the time, Natasha and I thought this would be our job for a month, but it turned out we only worked for two days. However, in those two days, Maricela taught me a lot: how to properly make beds, clean the bathroom, fold towels, dust, and vacuum the rooms. The hardest part is making the bed look nice, but together we did a great job. And quickly too. Maricela is Mexican. She is short, a bit chubby, with long black hair tied in a ponytail with several colorful hair ties. Maricela has been working at the hotel for about a year; her mother, Estella, is the head housekeeper at the hotel, and she was the one who assigned me to her. Maricela handles the cleaning very quickly; I couldn't keep up with her. But I tried very hard—I was interested in how everything functions. On the first day, Maricela and I cleaned 14 rooms, and on the second, 11. About half an hour per room. Work starts at 8:45. At 12:00, there is a half-hour lunch break. Room cleaning ends around 3 o'clock. But the work doesn't end there; you still need to vacuum the hallways, and often you have to help in the laundry room. Maricela doesn't speak English. She understands a little bit. When Maricela showed or explained something to me, I would say out loud what I thought she meant, and she would nod and say "Si!" if I understood correctly. Maricela is 21, the same age as me. That's why we worked together so happily and harmoniously. She would tell me the names of different objects in Spanish, and I would tell her in English. I am very grateful to Maricela for asking her husband, Ivan, to drive Natasha and me to the nearest Greyhound station in Birmingham. Ivan is Mexican. He understands English better than Maricela and can speak it a little bit. Maricela and Ivan have been married for six years. They got married in Mexico when Ivan was 16 and Maricela was 15. Their son, Christian, is four years old. They live in Bessemer, a suburb of Birmingham. Maricela works at the hotel, and Ivan works in construction. They rent a trailer for $400 a month. In a couple of years, they plan to return to Mexico to continue living and working there. Maricela doesn't like the USA; she likes Mexico. And Ivan says about the USA: "Too much money here."

NY, New York

NY, New York New York. Our day and a half in New York can be described in one word... HEAT! In the hostel at 38 West 88th Street, there was no air conditioning in the 8-person dorm. The windows were wide open, but it didn't help; on the contrary, it let in the smell of fast food being cooked somewhere nearby. And that ruined the whole experience of the hostel, which is located in the very center of New York, in Manhattan, right next to Central Park... If it weren't for the HEAT, the atmosphere there would have been just wonderful, because this student world with its own rules and laws, its own little art gallery, its own little garden and a cat walking in it, was really very cute! If it weren't for the HEAT, we would have slept normally (and if it weren't for the bunk beds))); if it weren't for the HEAT, my Snickers, bought back in Moscow and carried through all border checkpoints (you can't bring any food into the USA at all), wouldn't have melted right in my bag. It's a good thing I didn't manage to unwrap it and not finish it, as usual) I want to say a big thank you to Ryan for helping me book the hostel and tickets to Birmingham (Alabama), and for showing me the International Christian Assembly in Moscow, where I experienced culture shock 3 weeks before the trip)) And in New York, my mood of "My God, where have you ended up, Karpman..." changed to "Damn it, I'm here!" only once - when we reached Times Square. The first night and the first day in America were not easy. In fact, there was no euphoria, only flashes of joy sometimes. It's just hard to believe, but nothing was appealing and I didn't want to go anywhere except home, to Russia, to mom and dad, to my room with climate control. But we went for walks, took the subway, caught taxis, searched and asked, and arrived and traveled, and understood and found - and that's how we fought this mood. And we succeeded! ... You wake up at MacArthur Airport (one of the small airports in New York serving domestic flights, located on Long Island)... 2:45 AM, and check-in won't start until 5 AM. A layover in Baltimore and by 10 AM we should be in Birmingham, AL... Our Work and Travel started with Travel. And Work should start the day after tomorrow, in Bessemer, one of the suburbs of Birmingham, Alabama.
