À propos du lieu

Mount Gahinga stands as a dormant volcanic peak within the Virunga range along the border.

Mount Gahinga forms part of the Virunga volcanic chain spanning Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain sits between the peaks of Muhabura and Sabyinyo and represents the smallest volcano among these peaks. Its name comes from the local Rufumbira and Kinyarwanda dialect meaning a small pile of stones, directly lending its title to the surrounding national park.

The peak features a swampy caldera enclosed by high-altitude bamboo zones that shelter diverse wildlife populations across the international frontier. Hikers tackle the ascent as a day trek under the supervision of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, following marked tracks through protected cloud forest. Prolonged field assignments here involve navigating steep rainforest paths, heavy mud, and rapid shifts in cloud cover.
