pont de la Chapelle: ce qu’il y a autour, comment y aller et quand venir · 2026

Commuters cross between the old town and the new town daily along the timber footway, trading speed for a sheltered walking route through visitor crowds.

À propos du lieu

Europe's oldest covered wooden footbridge spans the Reuss diagonally as the primary pedestrian link between the old and new quarters.

Constructed as an integral segment of the town fortifications, the bridge joined the older settlement on the right bank with newer quarters across the water to defend against southern lake assaults. Builders erected a covered timber footway using strutted and triangulated trusses resting on piled river trestles, making it the oldest surviving truss bridge on earth. Triangular panels under the roof display interior paintings.

The adjoining octagonal water tower stood in the current before the bridge existed and served defensive and civic duties. Over time the stone citadel held prisoners, housed an interrogation chamber, guarded the communal treasury, and protected municipal archives. Although closed to ordinary entry, it now accommodates an artillery society and a small store. Careful reconstruction rebuilt the burnt spans and preserved the surviving panels.

  • The crossing originally formed part of the municipal ramparts linking the right bank to the left bank.
  • A destructive conflagration eliminated the majority of the historical ceiling paintings before the span was rebuilt.
