À propos du lieu

The Royal Palace stands as the formal seat of the Spanish monarchy in Madrid, reserved for state ceremonies rather than private domestic life.

The complex occupies the site of an Umayyad fortress built by the Emir of Cordoba that served Castilian monarchs before burning down in a Christmas Eve fire. Confusion over church bells and locked fortress gates delayed firefighters, destroying the medieval structure and several masterpieces. Court staff rescued Las Meninas by throwing the canvas from windows, while previous transfers to the Buen Retiro Palace protected royal collections.

Italian architects Filippo Juvarra and Giambattista Sacchetti replaced the ruins with a baroque layout centered on a square courtyard with projecting wings. Francesco Sabatini later planned northern extensions, leaving subterranean foundations that eventually supported royal stables and the current public Sabatini Gardens. The Bourbon crown occupied the finished palace, dedicating the grand halls to formal state receptions.

Subsequent monarchs reshaped the interior decor, transitioning the apartments toward French and Victorian styles under architect José Segundo de Lema. Today the complex remains the largest royal palace in Europe by floor space, yet the reigning family lives elsewhere. Long-term neighbours navigate frequent protocol cordons and perimeter closures around the Plaza de la Armería whenever foreign delegations arrive.
