À propos du lieu

Madrid waited centuries for a cathedral before completing Almudena opposite the royal palace.

Madrid lacked a cathedral when the royal court moved from Toledo, because imperial military spending overseas delayed local funding. The building eventually rose above the footprint of a medieval mosque destroyed during the Christian reconquest. After the Spanish Civil War halted work, Fernando Chueca Goitia adjusted the exterior to baroque forms so the facade would match the grey and white stone of the facing Palacio Real.

Pope John Paul II consecrated the building as seat of the Archdiocese of Madrid, honouring patron saints Isidro Labrador and Santa María la Real de la Almudena. Inside, modern chapels combine pop-art decor with mosaics by Marko Ivan Rupnik and apse icons by Kiko Argüello. Crown Prince Felipe married Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano at the main altar. Beneath the nave, a Neo-Romanesque crypt adjoins excavated Moorish fortifications.
