Tenants living in Berea base themselves in a calm pocket bordered by the historic town boundary, walking into busier inner blocks whenever municipal errands or supplies call.
Rising congregation numbers prompted Catholic leadership to replace their earlier church with a larger cathedral in Berea. Initial plans conceived by Bishop David O'Leary stalled during wartime, leaving Bishop W. P. Whelan to acquire a new plot and gather construction funding. Architect Brian Gregory of Belfast designed the broad hall, while supervisor John P. Monahan and local builders John Burrow completed the project.
The grounds occupy land formerly recorded under Henry Nourse along the historic edge of town development. City expansion turned this former town boundary into a centrally positioned sanctuary that remains quiet despite its proximity to denser districts. Diocesan history also carries political friction, including Bishop Whelan's controversial failure to distance church authority from apartheid policy.
