Residents in Rosebank trade central city noise for quiet avenues and historic artist estates near the campus.
The property occupies the artist's former residence, a home called The Firs in the Rosebank suburb of Cape Town. Established through a bequest in the painter's will, the estate placed private holdings into a dedicated trust fund to promote and advance the fine arts. The interior retains the domestic layout alongside curated galleries, displaying personal acquisitions and regional artwork to public visitors and scholars.
The preserved studio space remains arranged with the original easel, paintbrushes, rags, and working coat left in place. Beyond permanent archival arrangements, exhibition spaces have hosted contemporary showcases by South African artists including Esther Mahlangu, Jo Ractliffe, and Georgina Gratrix. These programmes drew directly on institutional funds to foster dialogue between historical collections and modern art.
Although the institution has formally ceased public museum operations, the estate stands as a significant point of reference for twentieth-century South African expressionism. Researchers and art historians continue to study the trust holdings, which capture both the painter's creative process and the broader evolution of mid-century southern African visual culture.
