Residents treat Belgrade Palace as an effortless compass across downtown, steering daily walks and office commutes by its towering silhouette.
The site originally held the corner residence of Jeremija Milivojević, which featured facades decorated in the Academism style. Before wartime conflict reached Yugoslavia, the Teokarević textile dynasty prepared investments to erect a commercial high-rise designed by architect Grigorije Samojlov. That conflict halted the venture, leaving the residential house standing until demolition cleared the parcel for modern redevelopment.
Zemun namesakes drove the construction of the high-rise: architect Branko Pešić designed the building while Belgrade mayor Branko Pešić laid the foundation charter. Excavations across the parcel uncovered powerful underground water springs, which workers channeled into the city sewage network. Builders used modern construction methods and a vast workforce to erect the downtown tower.
