À propos du lieu

Alte Feste stands as the oldest surviving structure in the capital, anchoring the ridge where the modern city grew.

German colonial forces erected the stronghold on a deserted inland plateau chosen to separate Nama and Herero territories. Masterminded by Captain Curt von François, the compound features an inner courtyard framed by high defensive ramparts, living quarters, and corner towers. Despite its armed garrison and military designation, the fortress never experienced active combat during its operational era as a troop command post.

South African Union troops took over the compound following the surrender of German forces, repurposing the rooms as their staff headquarters. The citadel later transitioned to peaceful civilian life as a boarding hostel for the adjacent Windhoek High School. Monument status preceded extensive restorative repairs, and the plaza outside formerly held the city equestrian statue before officials moved it into storage.
